Our second visit to Chestnut Tree House proved a success in all senses. Needing to provide a quiet and reflective area for bereaved families, the unused meadow area seemed the ideal plot.
With Clare Matthews at the helm for the design, the garden could not be in better hands. An offer of professional voluntary support from members from the local BALI group (British Association of Landscape Industries), prompted by DIY celebrity Tommy Walsh to Chair Richard Gardiner, ensured costs of the garden were kept to a minimum.
Clare's design including gently curving pathways, leading to numerous secluded seating areas was just what the hospice needed. A soothing water cascade provided the ideal place for the Memorial Pebbles with complementary seating. A large pergola, planted with scented climbers draws in families, siblings and staff who need a space to reflect.
The garden was opened by Tommy Walsh on 28th September 2008, and received wonderful comments from bereaved families and staff alike.
Further success came in the shape of an Award from the Sussex Heritage Trust - recognition of the design and team-work involved.
